What is the ETA 601 and why an app?

The ETA (subclass 601) is Australia’s electronic authorisation for tourism or business (up to 3 months per entry over 12 months) for several non-European countries. Unlike the European eVisitor, it is processed only from your phone using the official "Australian ETA" app, which reads your passport chip via NFC and asks for a verification selfie.

What you need before you start

• A valid chip (biometric) passport.
• A phone with NFC (most recent iPhones and Androids).
• The official "Australian ETA" app (App Store / Google Play). Do not use third-party sites.
• A card for the service charge (~AUD $20).

How to apply for the ETA 601 step by step

1. Install the official "Australian ETA" app.
2. Scan the data page of your passport.
3. Hold the passport to your phone to read the chip via NFC.
4. Take the face verification selfie.
5. Fill in your details and the health & character questions, exactly as in your passport.
6. Pay the charge (~AUD $20) and submit. The decision is emailed and linked to your passport.
