The seasons are flipped and the country runs from the tropics to the snow, so "the best time" depends on where you're going and what you want to do. Here you'll find the climate by region, a month-by-month calendar, when to watch whales or swim with whale sharks, when it's cheapest and what to pack. And, first things first, which visa you need.
Choosing when to travel to Australia can be the difference between a flawless trip and one washed out by rain (or scorched by extreme heat). As a country-continent stretching from the humid tropics to snow-capped Alps, there is no single "best time": there are several, depending on the region and on what you want to experience. In this guide, updated for 2026, we break it all down for you. Let's start with what needs to be sorted before you even look at dates: the visa.
Yes. Nobody enters Australia without a travel authorisation arranged before flying. Which one applies to you depends on your passport:
Choose according to the passport you're travelling on. Approval always depends on the Australian Government.
Australia sits in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are the opposite of Europe's. When it's winter in Spain, it's summer down there:
It has only two seasons: dry (MayâOctober) and wet (NovemberâApril). Go in the dry: clear skies, calm seas, low humidity and no dangerous jellyfish. In the wet there's monsoon, sticky heat, flooded roads and box and Irukandji jellyfish in the water (swim only in protected areas). Best time: JuneâSeptember.
Four clearly defined seasons. The best times are spring (SepâNov) and autumn (MarâMay): pleasant days for city breaks, coast and day trips. Summer can be very hot and expensive; winter is cool (Melbourne and Tasmania turn cold and rainy). Best time: MarchâMay and SeptemberâNovember.
Extreme desert climate. In summer (DecâFeb) it easily tops 40 â; in winter the days are perfect but nights drop below 0 â. Best time: AprilâSeptember, with sunny, mild days for walking around Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
Mediterranean in the southwest (dry summers, mild winters) and tropical in the north (Broome, the Kimberley). Spring (SepâNov) brings the famous wildflowers. To swim with whale sharks at Ningaloo, go from March to August. Best time overall: SeptemberâNovember.
| Month | What it's like | Where to go / what to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| January | Peak summer, very hot; extremely high and expensive season. | South and Tasmania (cooler). Avoid the north (monsoon) and the centre (extreme heat). |
| February | Summer; crowds thin out a little by mid-month. | Sydney, Melbourne, the south. North still wet. |
| March | Autumn begins: settled and pleasant. | A great month almost everywhere; whale sharks start at Ningaloo. |
| April | Ideal autumn, mild temperatures. | Excellent for combining north and south. |
| May | Cool and dry; among the lowest prices. | The dry season kicks off in the north and whales appear on the east coast. |
| June | Winter: dry in the north, cool in the south; snow in the Alps. | Tropical north and Uluru at their best. Ski season begins. |
| July | Deep winter; the north is spectacular. | Cairns, Whitsundays, Uluru, whales (Hervey Bay). |
| August | Dry winter; bright days in the north. | North, centre and whale watching. |
| September | Spring: wildflowers, ideal weather. | One of the best months across the whole country. |
| October | Warm spring; the northern dry season ends. | Excellent for combining regions. |
| November | Heat sets in; the wet season starts in the north. | South and centre. Watch out: jellyfish in the north from now on. |
| December | Summer and holidays: hot, crowded and expensive. | Southern beaches. Avoid the north (monsoon). |
