When to travel to Australia: the best time, month by month

The seasons are flipped and the country runs from the tropics to the snow, so "the best time" depends on where you're going and what you want to do. Here you'll find the climate by region, a month-by-month calendar, when to watch whales or swim with whale sharks, when it's cheapest and what to pack. And, first things first, which visa you need.

Choosing when to travel to Australia can be the difference between a flawless trip and one washed out by rain (or scorched by extreme heat). As a country-continent stretching from the humid tropics to snow-capped Alps, there is no single "best time": there are several, depending on the region and on what you want to experience. In this guide, updated for 2026, we break it all down for you. Let's start with what needs to be sorted before you even look at dates: the visa.

1. First things first: do you need a visa for Australia?

Yes. Nobody enters Australia without a travel authorisation arranged before flying. Which one applies to you depends on your passport:

Which visa is right for you?

Choose according to the passport you're travelling on. Approval always depends on the Australian Government.

💡 Sort it out with time to spare: during peak travel season, getting it done early saves you last-minute panic. Almost all refusals come from inconsistent data or poorly presented documentation.

2. The essentials: the seasons are flipped

Australia sits in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are the opposite of Europe's. When it's winter in Spain, it's summer down there:

☀️ SummerDec – Feb · hot (humid north, dry south), beach weather, high prices.
🍂 AutumnMar – May · mild and settled; one of the best times for almost everything.
❄️ WinterJun – Aug · dry in the north (perfect!), cool in the south, snow in the Alps.
🌸 SpringSep – Nov · temperate, wildflowers; the other great window for combining regions.
🗓️ Rule of thumb: April–May and September–October are the best windows for a trip that combines the tropical north (Great Barrier Reef, Cairns) and the south (Sydney, Melbourne), with good weather across almost the whole country and more reasonable prices.

3. Climate by region (this is where it all clicks)

🌴 Tropical north — Cairns, Whitsundays, Darwin, Kakadu

It has only two seasons: dry (May–October) and wet (November–April). Go in the dry: clear skies, calm seas, low humidity and no dangerous jellyfish. In the wet there's monsoon, sticky heat, flooded roads and box and Irukandji jellyfish in the water (swim only in protected areas). Best time: June–September.

🏙️ Temperate southeast — Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, Tasmania

Four clearly defined seasons. The best times are spring (Sep–Nov) and autumn (Mar–May): pleasant days for city breaks, coast and day trips. Summer can be very hot and expensive; winter is cool (Melbourne and Tasmania turn cold and rainy). Best time: March–May and September–November.

🏜️ Red Centre — Uluru, Alice Springs, the Outback

Extreme desert climate. In summer (Dec–Feb) it easily tops 40 ℃; in winter the days are perfect but nights drop below 0 ℃. Best time: April–September, with sunny, mild days for walking around Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

🌊 West — Perth, Margaret River, Ningaloo

Mediterranean in the southwest (dry summers, mild winters) and tropical in the north (Broome, the Kimberley). Spring (Sep–Nov) brings the famous wildflowers. To swim with whale sharks at Ningaloo, go from March to August. Best time overall: September–November.

4. Month-by-month calendar

MonthWhat it's likeWhere to go / what to avoid
JanuaryPeak summer, very hot; extremely high and expensive season.South and Tasmania (cooler). Avoid the north (monsoon) and the centre (extreme heat).

MarchAutumn begins: settled and pleasant.A great month almost everywhere; whale sharks start at Ningaloo.
AprilIdeal autumn, mild temperatures.Excellent for combining north and south.

5. The best time based on what you want to do

6. High, mid and low season

💸 Insider tip: travelling in May or September combines good weather, fewer crowds and mid-season prices. And the tropical north, which is "low season" in summer because of the monsoon, is at its very best in winter at reasonable prices.
